Security Lighting for Summer

Summer is the one time of year most of us actually switch off. Holidays are booked, bags are packed, and for a week or two, home is the last thing on your mind. Unfortunately, it's very much on the mind of opportunist burglars.

Empty homes are an easy target, and the summer months see a predictable spike in break-ins precisely because so many properties are left unoccupied. The good news is that one of the most effective deterrents is also one of the most straightforward, good security lighting.

Why Lighting Works

Burglars rely on not being seen. They look for dark driveways, unlit side gates, and shadowy corners where they can work without attracting attention. A well-lit property removes that cover entirely. Most opportunist intruders won't risk a home that's clearly visible, they'll simply move on to an easier target.

It doesn't need to be blinding floodlights either. The right combination of lights, placed in the right spots, is enough to make your home a much less attractive proposition.

Motion-Activated Lights

These are the workhorse of home security lighting. Triggered by movement, they flood an area with light the moment someone approaches, which tends to have an immediate and obvious effect on anyone who shouldn't be there.

They're also practical for everyday use. Coming home after a late evening out, bringing the bins in after dark, or just popping out to the car, motion-activated lights make all of it easier.

For maximum effect, cover your front door, driveway, side gates, and any rear access points. These are the spots most likely to be tested first.

Smart Lighting

If you want to go a step further, smart lighting systems can be controlled remotely via your phone and set to turn on and off at varying times while you're away. This creates the impression that someone is home, which is one of the most effective deterrents of all. A house that looks lived-in is a house that gets left alone.

A Word on Installation

Outdoor electrical work isn't a DIY job. Any lighting that involves new circuits, exterior fittings, or work near water features needs to be done by a qualified electrician to meet current wiring regulations. Done properly, it's also far more reliable. No flickering fittings or tripped circuits while you're relaxing on a beach somewhere.

A good electrician will also be able to advise on the best positions for your lights based on your property layout, so you're not left with blind spots.
